Modalities — how a sign acts. Cardinal (Ari·Can·Lib·Cap) starts. Fixed (Tau·Leo·Sco·Aqu) sustains. Mutable (Gem·Vir·Sag·Pis) adapts. Each holds one of every element.
Polarity — + (Yang, fire/air) is outward and expressive; − (Yin, earth/water) is inward and receptive. Signs alternate around the wheel.
Two rulers per sign. The Ruler column above gives the exoteric (personality) ruler. In esoteric astrology each sign also has a soul-level ruler that activates on the path of development — Aries' Mars becomes Mercury, Pisces' Jupiter becomes Pluto. The full three-tier system is in Esoteric Rulers.

Esoteric Rulers

three layers of rulership — personality, soul, initiate

Esoteric astrology (Alice Bailey / Djwhal Khul, 1951) reads the chart for soul purpose rather than personality. As consciousness develops, a sign's ruler shifts inward through three tiers — so the same sign answers to different planets depending on the level being read.

Exoteric
The personality. The orthodox rulers used everywhere else in this codex — the outer drive and circumstance.
Esoteric
The soul. Activates on the path of discipleship; describes the purpose behind the personality's drive.
Hierarchical
The initiate. A cosmic, evolutionary level for the realized being — beyond most individual readings.

♎LibraVenusUranusSaturn
♏ScorpioMars / PlutoMarsMercury
♐SagittariusJupiterThe EarthMars
♑CapricornSaturnSaturnVenus
♒AquariusUranus / SaturnJupiterMoon veils Uranus
♓PiscesJupiter / NeptunePlutoPluto
The veil. Where the Sun or Moon appears as a soul-level ruler, it stands in for a hidden planet — Vulcan, Neptune, or Uranus — treated as energies too subtle to name directly. So Virgo's soul ruler is the Moon veiling Vulcan, not the Moon itself.
Reading the soul chart. In soul-centered work the Ascendant, not the Sun, becomes the primary lens — it describes the vehicle the soul has chosen for this life. The shift often reframes the drive: Aries' forceful Mars becomes Mercury, the initiating energy revealed as mental design.

The Seven Rays

The rays are the engine beneath the rulerships — seven qualities of consciousness that the planets transmit to the signs. This is why bodies absent from conventional charts, Vulcan and the Earth, appear as rulers. The first three are rays of aspect; the last four, rays of attribute.

RayNameKeynotePlanetsColour
1Will · PowerDivine purpose, direction, the drive to manifestVulcan · PlutoRed
2Love-WisdomInclusive love; teaching and healing through wisdomJupiter · SunIndigo
3Active IntelligenceAbstract mind, adaptability, creative work in formSaturn · EarthGreen
4Harmony · ConflictBeauty, art, the reconciling of oppositesMercury · MoonYellow
5Concrete KnowledgeScience, analysis, precision, researchVenusOrange
6Devotion · IdealismFaith, aspiration, one-pointed devotion to an idealNeptune · MarsRose
7Ceremonial OrderRitual, organization, bringing spirit into ordered formUranus · MoonViolet
Sacred vs. non-sacred. Of the planets a ray transmits, the sacred one (Vulcan, Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, Uranus) works through the soul; the non-sacred (Mars, Earth, Pluto, Moon, Sun) works through the personality. Same ray, two octaves.
How to use it. Read the rays first, then the chart in their light — never the reverse. A sign carries its ray through its rulers, so a planet, its sign, and their shared ray reinforce one another when they align. Colour attributions vary between sources.

Master numbers — do not reduce

11 · Intuitive
The 2 elevated — illumination, vision, the spiritual messenger. Inspiration vs. anxiety.
22 · Builder
The 4 elevated — manifests grand visions in the material world. Power vs. pressure.
33 · Teacher
The 6 elevated — selfless healing, devotion, compassionate service. The master healer.
How to reduce
1990 → 1+9+9+0 = 19 → 1+9 = 10 → 1. Stop if you land on 11, 22, or 33.
The four core numbers. Life Path = full birth date reduced (your main journey). Expression = all letters of the full birth name (innate talents). Soul Urge = vowels only (inner desire). Personality = consonants only (outer self). Letters cycle A=1, B=2 … I=9, then J=1 again.

How It All Connects

four systems, one underlying map

The four elements unify everything

ElementSignsSuitQuality
FireAries · Leo · SagittariusWandsspirit, will
EarthTaurus · Virgo · CapricornPentaclesbody, matter
AirGemini · Libra · AquariusSwordsmind, idea
WaterCancer · Scorpio · PiscesCupssoul, feeling

The order is the same everywhere

One sequence. Sign 1 (Aries), House 1 (Self), and the initiating 1 in numerology all carry the same impulse — begin, assert, lead. Walk the signs and houses together; they share one arc from start (Aries / 1st) to dissolution (Pisces / 12th).
The core sentence of a chart. The planet is the actor (what), the sign is its style (how), the house is the stage (where). Master that grammar and a chart reads itself.
A study reference — these are interpretive traditions, not consensus science; treat them as symbolic languages for reflection. Sun-sign dates shift a day either way by year; rulerships list the modern planet first, the traditional in parentheses.
